I installed new ignition switch in a U S Marine remote. Cleaned post and cables on starter, solenoid, starter and battery. Took head off and replaced head gasket 19.lb torch. Charged battery with battery charger. No click. Try to start with a jump off battery charger as well and just get a click noise {not from starter). I played with the neutral switch on engine did not help. Is using the battery charger with a bad battery enough to start this engine? Is the shiftier maybe not have the cables in the correct position? I play with the propeller ensuring that it spins free even if not right. Starter does not get hot. Wires not burn. 5 gal. fuel in it. Is it some kind of safety switch? Starter does not move when try to start. but I cannot move bentix manually. (Is that normal?) I just need help trouble shooting this boat. It is my first boat. I traded a working 93 mustang for a boat that doesn't work I never worked on boats but I have a manual and i want to be successful with this exchange. Model # 908P91C serial #026152. It could be something simple. Or I made a big mistake. I need to get it started to know if it is worth the effort. The word was when I traded it that it was rebuilt except the head gasket and keys missing.
Old gasket was blown. The rest of the engine looked clean on the outside. Just need to get it started to see. Thank you for any and all help

The starter shaft with the bendix drive should rotate freely by hand albeit a little heavy (due to brush friction). If not, you might have to open and inspect the starter. If it does, you can try jumping the starter straight from the battery positive terminal. However, you need to make sure it is properly grounded. If the starter is not broke, it should kick-in and engage the flywheel. If it doesn't, try jumping both the positive and negative (body of the starter) from battery to starter. If no go or no turning, open and inspect starter or maybe replace. This is all with the assumption you have a good battery. Usually, a battery charger with starting capability can also be used.

Is the starter locked to the flywheel?
Does the flywheel turn?
The bendix on the starter move?
On the stbd.side of the motor is a small switch with a yellow/black(maybe red) wire comming from both ends of the switch.
There is a white button on the bottom of the switch it rests on a slide.the slide should be in the middle of the switch.
Bad battery and a battery charger??? How big is the charger? How bad is the battery?

DID YOU install the correct wires on the correct terminals of the new ignition switch? Start wire will be either yellow or blackwith a yellow trace and needs to be attached to the "S" terminal. RED wire attaches to the "B" terminal. Depending upon the ignition system, Power from the battery to thios red wire will vary If you ghave a Mercury ignition with a Quick-connect inside the engine, then be certain that all the terminals inside the quick-connect are clean and making contact.

Some US Marine control boxes DO have a small neutral interlock switch inside them. Be certain that if your box has this, that you 1. replaced it correctly and 2. It is being activated by the control box.

A couple of photos of your switch open control box, and engine wiring will help a lot.

AND--Unless your battery charger has a "BOOST" or starting position, it will not be able to crank the engine while attached to a dead battery. You would need to charge a good but dead battery for a couple of hours first.

Thank you for the response. The starter will not turn when rotating flywheel. Flywheel turns freely. Should I force the Bendix or take part starter? What should I look for look for during inspection? I will be working on boat tomorrow and will update you. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your response. Bendix moves freely up and down but starter will not turn. Flywheel moves freely. Is the slide on the cable supposed to rest on the white button? Battery has start amp capability. Battery seems to not hold a charge. (Dies quickly.) I am working on the boat tomorrow to update you on status. Thank you.

Thank you for your response. I have enclosed 5 attachments. I hope they will help you to help me. The colors of the wires closest to the switch are : RED, RED BLUE STRIPE, WHITE, YELLOW, BLUE, GREEN. I do not know if I have a neutral switch in control box.(Please advise) I now have shift interlock button on engine resting on slider. (Is this Correct?) There is a black wire with a small plugin hanging under dash . Is this a safety device that needs to be plugged in?Can not see were it may plug in. I will be working on boat tomorrow and will report on progress. Thank you for your time and attention. P.S. I have a boost start on charger.

The neutral safety switch is on the motor.
It's on the stbd.side and under the likage.
It will have yellow/black or yellow/red wires.
Shift interlock is the neutral safety.
If you can't get the starter to turn by hand??
Take it off and take it apart.
