OK guys.... I have a 91,2hp Johnson I picked up to push my small inflatable around. It won't start. I'll preface this by saying I'm not a motor guy but hopefully you guys may be able to suggest a couple things to check before I take it in for service.

The rope pulls fine, prop spins, and it make the "whomp whomp" sound

I replaced the spark plug

The fuel tank is vented (from the top of the cap)

Gas lever is switched on

It doesn't have F N R, you turn it around for reverse

I'm assuming the bottom of the throttle that has a circular symbol will be neutral and the starting setting.... And the carb is to the right... min is all the way up

sorry if I found stupid but I'm trying to learn all I can from you guys! If you need more info from the motor let me know and I'll get it asap!

Thanks a lot!

That would be a 1993 model.----Same motor is sold by various companies ( different decals and paint colour )----Check for spark, if no spark then remove flywheel and clean the contact points.----If you have spark then drain / clean carburetor.

OK.... I picked up an inline tester and my spark is good

My next thought is to drain all of the old fuel out of the tank and carb. Next question.... Looking over the fuel system there is no primer bulb at all.... Is that correct? And it's 50:1 right? can this be any 2 cycle oil for the sake of getting this running?

did you check the carb and clean it properly

you have fire... you have oxygen.... all you need now is fuel to reach the piston ( I assume compression is ok)

Re: '91 2hp Johnson won't start

That's my next thing.... I found where someone recommended spraying a small amount of my gas/oil mixture behind the spark plug and it fires up for about 10 seconds.... Once it even let me up the throttle for a couple seconds and it damn near bucked out of my barrel so I know everything is running in there.

Question.... Should I just remove the carb, clean and replace or do I need to get the rebuild kit? Would simply cleaning work at least enough to make sure there are no other problems to address?
Oh yeah.... And there is air in the fuel lines.... How do I address that?
Thanks again guys!

how much fuel is in your tank? the fuel line routing, and inline filter appear a bit odd? looks like if the tank was full , fuel would reach the carb, but you would run out at about a half tank.

YES! The guys I picked it up from had replaced impeller.... Cleaned the carb and replaced the fuel lines and filter... Even he questioned the way he routed it.
The tank is close to empty. Should that filter be laying horizontal with less line on a more direct route?!

May explain why it works with fuel sprayed behind the spark plug!

shouldnt matter how the filter is oriented, as long as the arrow is pointing the right direction ( if marked). id just fill the tank full and give it a try and see what happens. go from there.

Yeah... From lower unit

I figured that wouldn't be worth messing with if I couldn't get it running again.

Will deal with that in a couple weeks!

When I bought this thing it ran like a caddy but I couldn't get it running the other day so here I am.

if it is leaking engine oil its fine (just unburnt oil) go to sears buy a compression tester test it then return it (30 day return policy gotta love it)

Re: '91 2hp Johnson won't start

The original parts manual shows a filter right at the tank bottom. Without a fuel pump, and with air in the looped over fuel line, fuel will not reach the carburetor. I think a straighter run from the tank to the carburetor may solve this problem. I also wonder whether that hose is approved for gasoline.

Really?! No filter? I def thought a straight run would help but didn't think about not having a filter!
