Hey everybody,

I have been reading this forum now for a couple of weeks and you guys are awesome.
I've got a 1991 40hp johnson which was sitting for about 6 years. I started it about 2 weeks ago and now seem to have everything running well, I have changed lower unit seals and impeller, no leaks, engine starts and runs no problem except for my warning alarm wont go off. It stays on all the time, I have a VRO on the motor, but I run pre-mix and not sure if I even need the VRO, Is it possible the VRO alarm is going off and how do I disconnect it? Thanks.

Project guy

Does it Beep, Beep, Beep or is it a solid beep? Does it sound with just the key switch turned or only when the motor is running? Could be bad Temp Sensor on the motor. Look on the back of the motor head next to the top spark plug for the sensor. It has a tan wire going to it. Disconnect the wire and see if the horn stops sounding and we'll go from there. Are you sure it's really not overheating, even though you replaced the water pump? Can you hold your fingers on top of the head for a few seconds without getting burned or do you have to pull away right away when the engine is warmed up?

I disconnected the temp sensor and the buzz is still on. It is a constant buzz, on all the time when the key is on no matter how long the motor has been on. It is even on if the motor has been sitting in the garage. I'll have to do the finger test later, but memory seems that the engine can be touched while running although I haven't run it for more than 30 seconds at a time as it isn't in the water. I do have muffs on it.
