The engine does not smoke, leak, sound bad, or run anything but a little off the top!

cyl 1 50 psi
cyl 2 80 psi
cyl 3 130 psi
cyl 4 135 psi
cyl 5 135 psi

I think the seller forgot to force a burp once or twice and heated up as a result. No melted wires, nothing smells, no leaks. Starts first time every time.

Does this mean I need a new head (can do myself) or won't a head gasket cure this problem?

Before you do anything else, buy a can of SeaFoam from NAPA or any auto supply store and decarb your motor. You may have a simple case of rings sticking which can be resolved with $6 can of SeaFoam. If that does not solve your low compression on #1 & #2, open up your head and examine pistons.
