I`ve had this motor for the 3rd summer now.It was not running when I bought it.It had been kept outdoors a lot and was somewhat weathered looking.I could see the center screw was stripped from the housing on the fuel pump.he had the carb re-built twice, still wouldn`t do anything but idle rough.I took carb apart and found black specks.Fuel hose was rotten,he would rebuild carb, use same hose&trash it again.Replaced hose&ball&tank. It cranked right up&had great power. But even right after, and most times you run it it wants to stall at 1st 30 minutes of running.1st it seemed fuel hose ball wouldn`t keep tight, but sometimes even with bulb tight it will stall.you can pop fuel line off carb&it will pump a full stream with each pump.Even used the tank7hose from my late model 8HP&same deal. After that inital stall deal,it will run rest of day without a problem.you can even motor to a spot on river, fish for 5hours,start it up and it will run fine.I just took carb apart last night&it is still clean. This motor dosen`t idle quite as smooth as I would like, but it will troll pretty good.It has 120lbs compression in top,and 116 in bottom cylinder. Thanks for any thoughts,
regards,Dizz

did yo replace the fuel pump? could be leaking air abound the filter.the center screw hold the filter on. did you remove the jets and clean them and reassemble with new gaskets. the buld is not going to stay hard when running, it is used to pump gas to the carbs, until the bowl is filled, and the float needle closes, that when it gets hard, once the needle opens again the bulb will not be hard, as the fuel pump is sucking gas.

The fuel pump was just put on(new) when I got the boat.Just the center factory bolt with the knurled knob was stripped where it is threaded in the side of the aluminum pump housing.I used a large sheetmetal screw that cut new threads. It seemed to seal good. This engine is packed so tight in motor housing that`s nearly impossible to get to the fuel pump screws, and you can`t even see the fuel lines connecting it.hoses look good.
Same on the carb kit,all packets that had the old stuff came with boat.I`ve taken it apart twice without replacing gaskets, they looked fine.As to the low speed adj screw that sticks thru dash plate,it goes into the plastic(whole plastic top including jet was new 2 years ago with gaskets) carb top.I took the low speed idle jet screw out&cleaned all the ports I could find.afraid to use any harsh chemicals, thought it might damage plastic, used air.The bottom bowl on carb is also darned plastic. It had a little plastic housing with high speed jets that is pressed up into place my putting bowl back on,and sits in middle of float. The little plastic high speed jet housing has two brass jets in it,and a hose that feeds up into upper part all inside carb housing above float.I replaced this hose two years ago,it still looked fine.I made sure the jets were clear. What do you think?I know I have two areas with possible problems. Thanks for the reply,Dizz
