91 Evinrude 60hp Lower Unit Removal

Hey all,

Whats the process to removing the lower unit on a 1991 evinrude 60hp ive heard there are some complications with removing the shaft? By the carbs?
I plan to tackle this in a couple hours, any help is appreciated

No complications there at all.-------Find the shaft that goes across under the carburetors.----------Now on the starboard side remove the hitch pin on the shaft.----Now push that shaft to the port side of the boat.-----Have an assistantant gently move control to forward.--------Shift rod should now be disconnected.

So remove the unit while in neutral? Then slide the throttle in foward to free up the shaft? Now will it go back in, in neutral?

It really does not matter what gear you remove it in !!-----In order to release the shift rod follow post #2 ----Remove the 5 bolts on the lower unit and find the hidden bolt under the trim tab.----Do not turn the shift rod when it is off the motor.------After you are done you will say " that was easy "

Do you know what size the LU drain screws are?

Im going to helicoil my upper screw/drain plug housing because i stripped her

As far as I know they are 3/8", the same size/thread as photo camera or microphone stands.
