It could be a loose spark plug... :D

Seriously, it may be a lifter not pumping up well, but thats not real common on powerchokes. My best guess (impossible to know for sure without hearing it) is an injector hammering. Exhaust leaks typically don't go away.

Yes Ford?s are famous for exhaust manifold leaks?.but on gas engines. Not so much an issue with diesels. There are a few things it could be and I would recommend checking out powerstroke.org. They have a section dedicated to early 7.3?s.

If the engine has been sitting for a wile you may have a sticky lifter. Try putting in about half liter of ATF ( high detergent oil) and run the engine on till it is completely hot and see if the noise goes away. Change the oil soon after. The ATF wont hurt your engine but will lossen up any gue in there. Its worth a try before spending big bucks having some one look at it.

x2 change your oil... and filter...... my truck does it sometimes when i let it set for awhile... i think its the injectors .... when one bleeds off it takes a little bit of running to get going again... mine sat for over a year and it took a few days... and also run some additive(i always use power servies).... and i would advise to change the fuel filter mounted under the hood...(these engines are not powerstrokes)... if after all that its still ticking i would check your injectors make sure there tight... could be a lifter as also stated..... ive had my 7.3 93 model for about 6 years... i would never sale it ... its a beast...

good site is thedieselstop.com ...

I did a search on powerstroke.org related to ticking. Most threads were related to the glow plug relay/controller ticking after start up. Does the wait to start light stay on like it used to? Does it start hard? I know engines of this period aren't powerstrokes but they are still a 7.3 and powerstroke.org has a section dedicated to them.

Hey guys-
Changed the oil and filter last friday, ran it with some additive for 12 highway hours, still there but not as bad.
PJ, you are the second HD mech type thats said that this week, ATF, hmmmm
I think I will just keep running it, Does not seem to be hurting anything yet :D

Might consider adding an oil pressure gauge even if just temporary to see what pressure looks like. That Ford oil gauge on the dash is a glorified dumdum light and tells you nothing.
