Regulator showed 24 volts ac on yellow input/ no tach and no voltage other than battery voltage on the red output. Convinced it was regulator I replaced it with duplicate and have exact same results. Grounding appers ok. Baffled!

I think you are talking about the Rectifier.I'm not an expert but my guess is the rectifier is open.I think no tach is an indication of a defective rectifier.
Be sure all connections are clean and tight.Double check the negative side.
Don't assume because you have 12 volts connections are good.

Yes I meant rectifier. I put in a new one with same results unless I blew that one instantly. I have to get a non digital voltmeter and test it. My auto ranging meter gives me strange readings for resistance. Thanks for the reply.

What voltage do you measure on the output side of the rectifier, at the rectifier? (both AC and DC).

Your digital meter should be able to measure resisitance of the diodes in the rectifier, if it's disconnected from the circuit. Does your's have a diode setting also?
