i have a 92 thompson with a 3.0 lx motor. last year when i put the boat in the water and started it up the motor would fire up right away. i would usely wait about 5-10 seconds to make sure it didnt stall out (it very very rarely did stall out) then i would walk away and go park. this year when i start it up it dosent start right away i usely have to give it a little bit of throttle and i have to sit there and play with the throttle to keep it running for about 2 mins or so. and usely when it starts i get a small about of dark smoke (not blue smoke). i know the boat has an electric choke and my guess is that the electric choke is not working.

dose anybody have any other opinion's??? how would i check to see if the choke is working??? im very good with dirt bike, snowmobile, and atv motors, but im finding out that boat motors are quit different.

thanks

David

The choke could be adjusted too loose. It's electric, and as long as the ignition key is in the run position the choke is warming up and opening further. Since it was closed when cold, you might try turning the choke body 1 notch in the "more choke" direction, to hold the choke closed longer. Adjust as necessary to get the way you like it.
I find that Mercruisers settings in the manual are too tight, except for very cold weather.
