I have a '92 60 hp Johnson on a 17' Bass Tracker. The motor is original as far as I know and runs really good. But, it is always hard to start. Once I get it started it will run fine from point a to b with no problems. I can run it all day and like I said, it will run fine. If I go to move to a new spot it is hard to start. Like it is cold and I am starting it for the first time that day. I know it is an older motor and maybe I am expecting too much from it. I don't know...

Welcome to the forum. As TD asked, post your starting procedure as there is a specific way to start the motors, cold or hot.

Are you choking before starting? I have almost the same motor, but mine is a 1991. I have to choke pretty much every start to get it to fire up the first try....the only time I do not need to choke is if I just shut it off and then want to fire it back up...Many boats dont need to be choked once they have been warmed up, but for whatever reason, if mine sits for 5-10 minutes it needs to be choked again to start.

Well, as far as starting procedures go, I push the key in for about 10 seconds, then I will turn the enginge over. Usually it will fire immediately, but die just as quick. Then repeat first step again and if it will stay running long enough, I will attempt to raise the fast idle. I can accept cold starting when it hasn't ran for a few days or more. My thing is, I have to choke it every time I start it up, unless I just killed it. If this is all normal then I will just have to live with it. Am I following proper starting procedures or should I do something different?

Thanks,
Smitty

starting procedure, pump primebulb till hard, raise fast idle lever all the way, turn key to on, press in, holding it in turn to start. should fire, release key, then you may have to push key in several times until it settles down.

as far as having to choke again, you could have and air leak in fuel line, allowing pressure to drop, bad check valve in the primer bulb, pressure dropping.
