I have a '92 60 hp Johnson on a 17' aluminum bass boat. When I bought it (used), it came with 2 aluminum props that are pretty chewed up on the edges. How do I determine what size and pitch thay are? Or will someone at a propellor repair shop know so that it can be fixed? And would I have an advantage going to a stainless steel prop?

Thanks,
smitty

Re: '92 60 hp Johnson

Diameter you can measure. Both diameter and pitch are normally stamped into the barrel of the prop or into the end of the hub. Sometimes the manufacturers part number is provided rather than diameter and pitch. If you have the props repaired it doesn't matter what either number is as the repair facility has pitch blocks that they use to determine that. Advantage of stainless is 1) they are pretty, 2) they are heavy, 3) they cost a bunch, 4) do they make a race boat out of a fishing boat -- hardly. 5) Do they increase performance -- generally yes. 6) Do they increase performance enough to justify the extra cost? -- only you can make that call.
