Hello folks, another newbie here :) . Been lurking for a few weeks waiting for right time to write & time has come. Pulled head yesterday after comp.check with 5lbs. on #2 (1&3 had 115), and discovered rings disinigrated & trashed top of piston & top of head :( . I'm 2nd owner & only have put 20 hrs. on boat in last two years. Went to local boat shop & talked to mechanic. They want $2500+ to re-build. I found no cylinder scouring so far, & I'm considering doing the 1 new piston & full set of rings with a buddy in his garage. I (we) together are fairly mechanically inclined but neither has done any outboard work B4. I'm trying to keep costs down as money is really needed for home improvements instead.(Read wife is not happy either.) Since this my first post & this is getting long if any of you experts can offer advice, encouragement, pointers, I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance.
P.S. Love this site :D

I think you'll find that the middle cylinder needs to be bored. No big deal since you are getting a new piston anyway. Thats the expensive part. When you get it apart take it to a MARINE machine shop and have them measure the other two. Dont worry about what they look and feel like, go by what they measure.

If the cylinder head is damaged dont try to cut it to fix it. There are pleanty of good used ones available. Be cautious if your machinist wants to "deck" the block.

Now, the hardest part of this will be to determine what caused the damage to number 2.

If you like, post a bit more about your set up and how it runs. Perhaps we may help avoid a repeat performance.

Whats the top capeable rpm's with an average load?

What spark plugs were you using?

What grade fuel?

What kind of a boat?

Re: 92 Evinrude 60 hp 3cyl. (now a 2 cyl.)

i would never pay 2500 dollars to replace 1 piston and rebore one cilinder.
i'm rebuiling a v 4 with 2 new pistons and rering them all 4.
i think i can do the job myself for les then 1000 dollars. and then i replaced a trim pump and have the starter rebuild, carbs rebuild, new paint, waterpump, tstats.you will safe 65 to 90 dollars an hour for labour if you do it yourself and the best part of it you will learn a lot and it is fun to do

dont forget to figger out why #2 had ring failure. i defenetley would rebuild the carb.
ones you have it all set up again bring it to a mechanic to check it out and time the motor.

good luck

I have the same engine and the same problem. My dealer said my block was too scored to bore and not to sleeve this enigine. I am in the process of replacing the powerhead with one i purchased from iboats.

These service bulletins may address some of the cooling systems with your engine, they were posted for me by seahorse.

"60 & 70 hp service bulletins for cooling and overheating

SB 2221 Temp sensor new sensor pn 584166, tan/blue stripe wire.

SB 2225 thermostat seat new seat pn 336416, may not need this in fresh water.

SB 2271 jet and timing kits

SB 2276R1 relocate tattle tale nipple to top of block.

SB 2276R1 and new pressure relief springs comes in waterpump kit pn 432955."

I understand this is a common problem with this engine.

Good luck

There are several other issues not addressed in those bulletins. While its important to update the powerhead there are other issues that need attention. We've seen the same #2 issue on blocks that have the updates.

We have to take things from the beginning. Lets get the background and go from there.
