Hi All,
My Johnson 40 wont idle. It will run like a champ above idle. Carbs are clean. I have 120, 112 psi in the two cylinders. I already replaced the coil that the two spark plugs go into. This was really kicking my rear and so finally i took it to my local boat repair shop. The mechanic adjusted the timing and low idle mixture screws but could not figure it out then he discovered the low idle circuit coming from the stator was not working. He explained to me that there was a low speed(idle) circuit and a high speed circuit. I wanted to save some money and change it myself so he told me to take it home and remove the flywheel. I would see a serial number and that was the part that I needed to buy. So I dont know if I need to buy the whole assembly or just the power pack that has the serial number.

Please help if you can. That's why I'm asking what part of the assembly houses the low speed(idle) circuit.

Thank you guys

So there is no such thing? Or are you just talking off the top of your head? Here's a pic,

Omc motors do not have that. Mercury outboard stators can have high and low speed windings in their stators. Get a new mechanic!

Above is absolutely true. Go to Cdielectronics.com . Use their free troubleshooting guide. Make sure it's an ignition related issue and if it is buy their kit to get rid of the UFI system.

my guess is you need a different mechanic and it's really a link and synch or carb issue.

start with this simple test:

1. pull both plugs.

2. place the appropriate spark tester set to 7/16" open air gap on each plug.

2.5. Make sure starter spins motor over ~300rpm

3. have some one turn the key.
do you have spark on each?

4. Yes, or no?
