Hello. I have a 92 Johnson 40hp model #VJ40TLENM and had a bent prop shaft. I got the shaft our and straightened and am now getting ready to put it all back together. I bought the seal kit #18-2694 and have a couple of questions on where a couple of the O rings that come with the kit go. There are 2 larger o rings (one for water pump housing and one for bearing assembly) and 3 medium sized ones (one for shift linkage assembly) and i dont know where the other 2 go. They are about 2-2 1/2" and for the life of me I cant see where they go. It also has one nylon washer and then 2 small O type rings that are round on the outside but are Octogon on the inside...any ideas on them or the nylon washer? I got all the seals replaced with no problems and a couple of the larger o-rings but have no ideas about the others mentiond above..Does this kit supply more than my motor and maybe i wont use everything? thanks

chad

Re: 92 Johnson 40hp lower unit seal kit question.

The two O-rings you mention. One goes around the upper driveshaft bearing carrier, the other around the shift rod upper housing. There is also a small, fat O-ring that goes around the shift rod, it is under a nut in the shift rod housing. The large O-ring goes around the prop shaft bearing carrier. The O-rings that are octagon inside are used under the prop shaft bearing carrier retaining bolts, They are not used on your engine. Your engine has the two retaining tabs to hold the carrier. The nylon washer I believe is for the drain plug.

Great...thanks for the info...it will help a ton..

One other question...Is there any way possible to get the three detent balls and spring and clutch dog back together without the "special tool"? If the tool is needed, what does it look like?

Thanks for the help...

Chad

The tool is a hollow sleeve with notched ends that match the gear engagement surfaces. It can be diificult to assemble with this tool. I would say impossible without it.
