Have a few questions about a boat engine I just bought. It is on a 1992 Bayliner Rendezvous that has been stored in a boat house for last 10 years.
It is a 92 Mariner EFI Magnum. The motor starts fine if you throttle up to about 1/4 throttle when starting. However, when you bring the throttle back to idle to place in gear, it will shut off frequently. When it finally does idle, it is idling at around 500 RPM. Seems low to me. How can I bring it up a to 650-700?
The other question, when starting it and letting it run, in water or on ears, it will take it about a minute before it starts peeing strong. Once it does, it continues. It acts like a thermostat or something prevents it from peeing until it gets warmed up. Is this normal? I have only had smaller outboards and they seem to pee right at the beginning of startup. This one sputters a little water here and there until it gets good and warm. The pump was supposedly replaced last year along with fuel lines. I have no doubt it was done. I checked the lower unit nuts and they appeared to have been taken off recently and the fuel lines and filter is all new.
Any thanks is appreciated.

Re: 92 Mariner 175 EFI Magnum

I wanted to bump this up to try to get some responses.
New info. I did not add before that the seller had it in the shop to be repaired after I went by to check it out and it would not start. The marine shop replaced a spark box unit for 1,3,5 cylinders and the switch and kill switch. They also have "adjusted idle" on the work order. I placed the ears on it in the shop. It runs great. Fires right up, goes in gear, perfect. Put it in the water again yesterday and same thing. Starts with throttle in idle, will not start in idle position. As soon as I go to put it in gear, it dies. Also, had to do some low speed idle stuff today and it would die, then was hard to restart. It does seem like it is missing at low speed. I am going to try to change the plugs and if I can find a compression tester, I will do that. Anything else I can do?

Needs ta go back to tha "shop" for a redo! Get 'em put it in tha water, in gear and make it idle. Big difference on tha muffs and actual under a load.............jmo. And yes, there are T-stats. Thats normal.
