92 searay mercruiser grinds going into neutral

Just bought a 92 Searay with 4.3L Mercruiser, second time I took it out I noticed a slight grinding rattling sound when in neutral. It shifts into forward and reversed just fine and sounds smooth and runs good, when I shift back into neutral there is a very loud grinding sound and then the lesser sound when idling in neutral. <br /><br />I was not told to shift it briskly when I got it, I now know and can avoid the grind on shift but why does it sound so rough now in neutral. <br /><br />Most of the other entries I have read complain about it grinding into gear, mine is the opposite, it grinds going out of gear.<br /><br />any suggestions would help

check the interupt switch, the gears are made to go into gear under power but to get to neutral the engine has to be momentary stopped to release torque on the drive train. there is a small micro/roller switch mounted on the shift plate that grounds the ignition for a brief moment so the gears can release.....if it is not adjusted properly, it is hard to get the drive out of gear......good luck

Street1, It may be that a gear is slightly engaged in the nuetral position. I would disconnect the shift cable at the motor and check it's adjustment.

Street1, If it is the interupter switch you might have a hard time finding one to replace it with. I have a 1990 Sea Ray with the 4.3l and I just had to replace that same switch. Every were that you look it says that the part is no longer availible. But ther is a kit that you can get that replaces the bracket and the switch. Good Luck
