So I'm almost ready to get the old girl wet. The motor and the controls were purchased separately. I've looked thorough my manual and can't find a definitive way to adjust the shift cable. Is there a procedure for this? The throttle control is fairly simple from the looks of it I just don't want to chew up a clutch due to a bad adjustment

Controls are Mercury right? If aftermarket, make sure they are compatible with Mercury.

OK, disconnect the shift cable and throttle cable from the motor. Set the shift to neutral. Make sure the motor is in neutral. Now adjust the shift cable (remember shift cable moves first, when throttle handle is moved from neutral) barrel nut so that shift cable end fits onto shift slide, w/o moving it. Install cable and tighten acorn nut.

For throttle cable...push throttle closed, and attach throttle cable end to throttle.. Adjust throttle cable barrel nut to add some preload to push throttle closed. Push barrel nut into holder and close clamp.

Just that simple huh? The control box is a Quicksilver.

That's pretty much what I did just wanted to make sure I didn't need to do some bizarre ritual

Oh, I forgot ritual.

1) Adjust controls.

2) Build a fire, throw some rum onto flames while chanting.

3) go boating.

Number 2 is optional.....
