Help,

With about 20 hours on a recent rebuild for a bad middle cylinder (ran hot) this 3 cylinder is having a problem that the repair shop can't figure out. The engine doesn't want to idle making it difficult loading, unloading and trolling. The engine snorts and will eventually just die at idle. The problem has been isolated to the top cylinder. So far all carbs have been rebuilt twice, new plugs, timing set to factory specs, fuel filter replaced and quality of fuel confirmed (no water). There is a strong spark to all cylinders and compression is up to specs. There is no fuel being spit back out of the carbs like a broken reed would do. The engine runs great when on the hi speed jets but at idle stumbles and sneezes and pushes a considerable amount of gas thru the exhaust as shown by the sheen in the water while running it on muffs. This sheen is WAY more than ever since this problem cropped up. The problem was not there during the 10 hour break in when the timing was retarded to aid break in. It seems that when pulling the plug wires while at idle pulling the top cylinder wire is not firing its fuel charge even though there is fire at the fire. So when it doesn't fire it is dumping its fuel to exhaust.

Suggestions to tell the mechanic while this engine is still under the rebuild warranty would be very much appreciated.

Thanks much
