My brand new '93 9.9 Force will not shift at all into forward gear. I removed the lower gear unit and pushed the lower shift shaft to its lowest position, which properly engaged reverse gear. I then raised the shift rod up one position, disengaging reverse and successfully obtained neutral. However, when I continue to raise the shift rod up to the next position, the lower unit will not engage into forward gear. This same result is achieved no matter if I start the sequence with the shift rod screwed all the way down or with it incrementally screwed out in various amounts. All "appears" normal when looking at the top of the lower gears with the drive shaft removed. You would think that there must be a "formula" or "nornal process" for positioning the lower unit shift rod in relation to the upper shift rod for reassembly so one does not have this kind of a gear shif allignment problem every time they drop the lower gear unit to perhaps change the empeller or pull maintenance on the waterpump! What is my next step other than purchasing a repair manual?
