93 90hp Johnson Starter Problem

I have a 93 oil injected 90HP Johnson (not VRO) that I've owned for only a short time, but with no problems.

When I tried to start it today, the starter motor spins, but the gear (bendix?) does not kick up to engage the toothed ring on the flywheel. It just spins. I tapped (gently) the bendix assy with the butt of my screwdriver and it worked fine two or three times in a row. After that I have to repeat the procedure to get it to start, however.

The gear/bendix has a slight dusting of rust on it and appears to be free of any lube. I'm thinking either a bad starter solenoid or the bendix may need lube.

Does anyone have an experience with this problem? Thanks in advance.

If the rust is only surface oxidation, simply use a solvent to clean the bendix and then use the lightest oil you can find (gun oil)and coat the sliding surfaces. If the rust is pitted and rough to the touch, I would disassemble, use an abrasive pad or sand paper to smooth out the surfaces, and then follow the previos steps. I have not had a problem with mine after doing this the start of every season.
Good luck

Thanks, Angus. I'll give that a try. The rust is surface only and there is little if any pitting.
