I have read somewhere that the rectifier does have something to do with it somehow, but don't hold me to it. Is your system charging properly? If it ran good for 2 hours, it sounds like a heat problem or a voltage problem at the pack.

Re: 93 evinrude power pack bad

your regulator is most likely the root of your problem . It is somewhat common for alot of johnson evinrude motors 93- 98 if your regulators on the top of the block like i think the problem is heat at the top of the block at time it will get a air pocket or air bubble at the very top whete the regulator sits when this happens the watercooled regualtor cant disapate heat thus overheating the regulator to the point will burn anything in the area of it . the stuff you see oozing is from the regulator is the insulating material on the regulator i would be sure to chk the stator for browning on the charge coils this is a sign of future failure resulting from the overworked reguator .a few thing I would check are your battery, connections, no wing nuts if possible, your poppit valve or air bleeder valve located at to of engine near thermastats this is the device designed to bleed air from the block for good waterflow throug-out the block, & water pump, last do a search on this site & enter the words regulator ,rectifier dont be supprised its a very common problem for OMc
