What would cause the water pump not to pump water? We have replaced the water pump and the new pump won't pump either. It has my Johnson dealer stumped. Does any one have any idea what might make it do that?

Thanks,

CatCruzer

Howdy, Cruzer.

The key that holds the impeller to the driveshaft can get left out or shear.

Miscellaneous critters can block water passages with their nests, etc.

Good luck. :)

I know he checked for some thing blocking it up and did not find any thing there. I dont know if he has check the key or not, but I say he has. I do know that he was looking at the exhaust, cause he thought there might be back flow from it. He did say that it has been worked on before, but he can't tell what is wrong.

Thanks,

CatCruzer

Re: 93 Johnson 25hp tiller

Occassionally, I used to run my Evinrude 9 1/2 in a large garbage can. Then one day I realized it quit pumping water. I thought the water pump had gone out, so I took it to a local outboard repair shop. The mechanic told me that 95% of the time, an outboard won't pump water in a garbage can or barrel because there isn't enough water circulation. He put it in a large trough, and it pumped water like the day it was new. Have you been running it in a contained area of water? If so, this could be the problem. Just a thought! Thanks

Brent

Brent,

I have ran it in a barrel and it did pump water just fine before. Then I got one of them hose mounts to hook it up to the intakes and it it pumps just fine. But now it don't pump. Well lets start at the begining. I was out on the water and it lost power (wide open runs 24.5mph but it ran only 6mph), then I limped it back to the dock and loaded it up. When I got home I hooked the hose up to it and it was pumping just fine, then a couple of minutes later it quit pumping, so I shut if down. Then I popped the top and checked the outflow hose and it was not plugged, so I started again and steam came out there the hose hooks up. Took it to the shop and the guy put a new pump on it and it still won't pump, and this has him stumped.

Thanks,

CatCruzer

Are you sure that the intakes are not clogged with seaweed/mud/plastic bag etc...? That would explain getting water sometime and sometimes not.

I talked to my repair guy, that is working on my motor. And he said he has checked the water tube and it was clear, he has also checked the whole lower unit too every thing is fine. He has checked the thermostate and it is operating right. He said that he can blow air through it but can't get the water through. He said he was going to check the power head and go from there.

Thanks,

CatCruzer

Hey all got the problem fix. It was a cracked exhaust plate, that caused it not to pump water.

Thanks,

CarCruzer
