The tachometer on my boat has started to read incorrectly. Sometimes it reads higher than what the motor is turning, like at idle. Is there a way to determine if its the tach or the rectifier?
Motor starts and runs fine, top speed is 41MPH which it has been since new.
Phil

Re: 93 Johnson 88 SPL

Anyone know if this test will work on my 88SPL?

The gray lead of the engine wiring harness is connected to the gray lead of the regulator/rectifier. Move that wiring harness gray lead so that it connects to one of the yellow leads of the stator. You may need to try both yellow leads.

If the tachometer operates as it should with the gray lead connected to one of the yellow stator leads, the water cooled regulator/rectifier is failing and requires replacing.

And of course, if the tach still reads weird, the tach is faulty.
