just took my merc 25 to an independent merc mechanic today to have him look at my carb....it's a 93 model. He looked at the carb linkage and told me that something was wrong w/the linkage, that I had NO timing advance on the motor. I bought the motor used, but it all looks like new under the hood,( doesn't look tampered with)...He told me that he had NEVER seen a 25 hp without some means of timing advance. Was he mistaken, or is there some sort of electronic advance on this motor? serial # OG112621......also, it has a primer instead of a choke, and is supposed to have "fast idle" control by twisting the primer knob, but it doesn't seem to do anything....when I twist it, the lever that pushes the primer plunger down moves down toward the primer plunger, but I can't tell that it does anything else....Can anyone tell
me if this is normal for this motor???? thanks, Fred

I have a 1999 model 25 horse merc and its the same way. You can turn that knob either way and it really doesn't do a whole lot. I do know that if you try to crank the engine with the primer knob pulled out it acts as a choke. I can take a look at my engine about the timing advance when I get home this afternoon and post later on.

thanks, EF, I'm from West, Ms., and I took the motor to Mr. Bill Walters, over in Carthage....he says he's worked on merc 25's , all the way up to 99 models, and has never seen one w/o spark advance attached to the throttle linkage before...
many thanks for the help....
