My Mercury runs great but I have recently picked up a little problem, ocasionally when you first try to get it up on plane my tach quits working and the fuel pump shuts itself off which in turn kills the motor. I have replaced the ignition switch after talking to a tech at Dixie marine but that did not cure the problem. Any Thoughts?

Re: 93 Mercury 150 EFI

My first thought is the battery. It has to meet the minimum requirement. Regular Duty marine batteries aren't strong enough, but heavy duty ones are. The connections have to be corrosion-free and the wingnuts have to be pliers-tight. All EFI functions are straight off the battery.

Another thing that might need attention is the charging system. If it isn't keeping up with the demand of the EFI, then it starts misbehaving. There should be two voltage regulators behind the coil plate. One or both may have failed. Original ones have clear greenish potting. You can usually see a failure inside. The potting around it gets brown. Basically a burn spot.

Wiggle connections and snug-up grounds.
