I am looking at a boat-trailer-Motor package that looks great and has a great price... I think. The seller says:

"Yamaha 25hp manual start tiller short(15') shaft. Runs rough (recently), low compression, may require an engine rebuild, according to a mechanic. Has new propeller, and lower unit was replaced at the end of last season."

My question is this: How much would it cost to rebuild? I know that there are some variables to consider, but lets just say.. average rule of thumb.

2nd question: Is it hard? Again... I know... variables... but again... in general. I have some mechanical ability; I do a fair bit of automotive mechanics, simple stuff like break changes and bearings and exhaust... things like that.

I will have all winter to do it (if I go ahead and buy this package...) and I am certainly willing to work for this deal. I am not entirely against have the rebuild done by a pro... but it would likely make this less of a "deal"!!

I did do several searches, but I did not find a whole lot on smaller outboard rebuilds. Most seemed to center on high HP ones and lower units. If there is a thread or threads that I am missing, please point me in the right direction.

Thanks gents!

Busy forum... easy to get ones posted question lost in the roar of the board! I have gone through about 30 pages to see if I can find the answers I am looking for, but no luck yet.

its a fairly simple deal, discounting any saltwater corrosion.
pistons are avalible in .025 and .05mm oversize.
crank can be repaired if nessasary by Ackermann marine in wilmington NC,or at least they used to.follow the correct yamaha service manual for the 25 in question and its simple.
