Hello all first time poster. I just purchased my first boat from a neighbor that is in Iraq. The boat has been sitting up (supposedly) since summer of 2003. The guys uncle that handled the sale for him said that it only needed a fuel pump and battery. I got both and tried to fire it up. the starter would engage the flywheel but not turn it. I searched here and found some good info but am still a alittle confused. I took the plugs off and could not turn the flywheel by hand more than 1/8 of a turn. I searcvhed some more, then sprayed wd40 into the plug holes and worked the flywheel back and forth. I can now get it to turn almost a full rotation , but it does seem to catch in the same spot. I ran out of wd40 and called it a night. Am I sniffing in the right area and will what I am doing eventually free it up or is their more serious issues? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

time to remove the gear case. if it turns then its a gear case issue. if it does not its a crank/rod/piston issue and must be torn down for further inspection. or you can run it and find if its a rusted bearing when the rod sicks out the block.

Thanks for your reply. Thats what I was afraid of.I am not much of a mechanic, maybe I can find the instructions on here. How involved will this be. Do you have a ballpark on what a pro would charge?

can you tell me what is damaged?
if its just a piston and the crank is ok its not bad. if the crank is toast its best to find a reman unit. but it still could be the lower unit.

Re: '93 yamaha c85ltrr locked up?

Hey rodbolt,
Looking further, the bottom two pistons move up and down properly while turning the fly wheel. The top piston does not move at all, and when the flywheel gets to where it stops I can feel something bumping the top piston through a wooden dowel. Out of curiosity I tapped on the dowel and was able to push the top piston in. When I turn the flywheel it pushes the top piston out. but not back in. I found a schematic on the crankcase and cylinder case but am leaning towards waitng until I get a manual before attemting to take anything apart. It seems to me like something is not connected in the top piston?Something came loose or breakage? Does this sound common? Any collateral damge couldve been caused by this when whatever happened, happened?

I think rodbolt has gone into shock, that does not sound good, if the piston does indeed stay still when flywheel is turned it means bad things! best wait for your manual and take off the head to have a look and post for further advice, when you can

The cap screws on the rod have come loose, pull the carbs and reed valves and inspect the crank and rod etc. for damage, you are into major work, but do noe despair, you can salvage it unless there is damage to the components.
