I had to have one cylinder bored out due to the piston ring locater pin coming loose. I purchased a non-oem gasket set. The head gaskets do not have nearly the same amount of water circulation holes in them as the ones I removed. The supplier claims this is not a problem. Does anyone have any input?

Welcome!!

I wouldnt worry too much about the holes. I'd worry more about the material. Whose gasket is it?

If you lost a locating pin on that motor (top one I'll bet) you should change all 6 pistons. Losing that pin indicates abnormal combustion temps. If one came out the others are, most likely, loose.

I would also suggest not using pistons that still have the pins over the finger port locations.

I'll have to look when I get home about the manufacturer. The gaskets look pretty good, with a thin blue line of sealer where needed, and one sticky side. .020 cleaned up the bad cylinder, and yes, I am replacing all of them. I had one carb needle stick closed for some reason, which caused the hot cylinder by the time I was able to diagnose what was wrong. I got the needle free-did not see any reason for the occurance. The engine ran fine for a day, then started not idling properly. Comprssion test showed me bad news. 5 @ 110psi, 1 @ 70psi.(NOT GOOD!)I've got all 6 new pistons/rings installed, getting ready to put the heads on. That's when I noticed the difference in the water passage cutouts. It looks like the new gaskets limit flow through the heads to only from the bottom to the top, instead of circulating past the head gasket towards the block. What do you think?

Hmm...that seems a little odd to me that the head gaskets are different from the OEM gaskets. I'd be concerned about that, too.

If it were me, I'd march right down to the local Johnnyrude dealer and buy a set of OEM gaskets, and check them, too.

But that's just me.

What brand pistons did you get? Were either of the locating pins in line with the finger ports?

The oem pistons that came out have the pin above the upper finger port. (top rng) I replaced them with GLM cast pistons, and did not notice if the pins were located in the same place. The pin that came out just put one minor ding in the top of the finger port that almost went away when the cyl was bored. Of course it had to scratch up and down a few times in the cylider first.(just enough to require boring) I don't know why the ring gap could not be placed a little to one side of the finger port. The bottom ring pin is on the exhaust side. I think I'll pick up a couple of oem head gaskets tomorrow. All of this comes at a most unwelcome time, since I just spent $$$ rebuilding the lower unit due to a bent shaft from a submerged piling. Thanks for your input!

Those pistons have the top pin located over the finger port. Youll have to do everything possible to keep the combustion temps down so it wont happen again. Be sure to use Champion plugs, fresh 87 octane and set up for 6000 rpm. And watch your water pressure!

Re: 94 200 Ev. headgaskets

Thanks, I am constantly aware of my engine's vital signs. The stuck carb thing was some kind of fluke deal. I used to get 6000 wot before I had a hard top installed. I lost about 300-400 due to that. I think a prop change would put me over that by too much. I use good oil, watch my water pressure and fuel flow meter. Excessive fuel flow is an excellent indicator if a plug fouls or you lose a cylinder for any reason. I know how bad the engine runs if a thermostat fails, and lets the engine run too cold. It's just one of those unfortunate series of events that has led up too all this.
