I have a 94' Force 40 HP on a 16' Monark that I just purchased. It wants to be hard to start when it is cold, but it will start. Today, I took it out and it ran fine all the way across the lake to where I was going. I killed it and trolled for about 30 minutes and then it started right back up without hesitation. I ran it all the way back across the lake and pulled up to the pier and let it idle for approx. 3-5 minutes while I back my trailer into the water. I got back into the boat and put it in reverse and began to back out and it went dead. I tried to restart several times and it wouldn't. I had to troll onto the trailer. I appreciate any info on this problem. Another short note is that the first day that I bought the boat, I took it out for about 10 minutes and killed the motor and while restarting it, it seemed to be hard starting, but it did start. Maybe this info will help also. Thanks!

First thing first take a compression test on the cylinders make sure you ground the spark plug wires to ground or throw throw the kill switch so spark plugs wont fire.If compression check out o.k. check and see if you have a good spark at the plugs. If spark is good next step would be to chech out the fuel system

What is needed for a compression test? Is this something anyone can do, or is it best to be done by a marine mechanic? The boat runs great when running.

You need a guage to do the compression test. Any auto supply or farm center will have one, some decent hardware store. About$15-25 for a generic one.

Read the directions.
Do a search here for more tips.
Search for "How To compression test"
