Newbie here-care to explain how it works? On my old jetski there was a spot to just screw in a hose to flush the engine. This is my first outboard-is there a hose connect I'm not seeing and what are "ears" and how do you use/where do you buy them?

Thanks!

You can buy the ears/muffs at any Walmart/Kmart or boat supply store. You screw the hose into the side of the muffs, slip the muffs over the water intake ports on the sides of the lower unit (they are small holes on each side of the L/U, usually with little screens in them just above the bullet shaped section) and turn up the pressure!

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I assume that the water will shoot out of both holes on the back of the 94 40hp force? I've read many different versions of what (smoke steam water spit) is supposed to come out of those 2 holes when in normal running.

I wouldn't turn the water on wfo. You don't want to blow past the water pump, just enough to cool the engine at low rpm's (not much over idle) for any length of time. Probably 2000rpm's max.

c/6

Hooty

It may be hard to find muffs that will fit the water intake. Look for ones with sqaure cups on it,as the round ones wont werk (been there, done that).
I used to use a trash can (still do sometimes), with a thru-hull fitting in the bottom of it to drain it when done----It werked super.
The two hole in the leg should emitt a "sputter".
There is no telltale on these motors.
But after the thermostat opens up (about 30seconds to a minute), it should sputter out of those two holes as if you told it a joke with a mouthfull of water.
Consider mounting an aftermarket temp gauge on it. I used a digital outdoor/indoor thermometer I bought a Radio Shack for 10 bukz. And I glued the probe to the block using JBWeld. I have yet to change the button battery in it, but it's hard to read in sunlight. Of course, they make a gauge that pluggs in, but they are hard to find, and an auto gauge reads too slow to be of any use. If you decide not to mount one, just keep an eye on those two holes.
Being a newbie to boating, you may want instructions on checking the lower unit;
LOWER UNITS 101
With frequent decarbing, and and attention to all maintainence items, you should get lots of fun out of that engine.
And welcome to iboats :)

Figured I would throw this in.
Some of the cheaper muffs only expell water from 1 side. On some older smaller motors, there is only 1 water pickup. Make sure you have muff over correct opening, especially on motors with no tell tale.
