On the top rear of the motor, there is a small hard plastic tube that goes up to the console. I cant remember what guage it connects to right now? Mine broke, motor still runs though. What is it for?
thanks

If it comes from the thermostat housing (and it's like my engine), it goes to the water pressure gauge. It lets you know the water pump is working when you can't see the telltale stream.

Pics?
Most Forces even the newer ones didn't come with a pressure gauge.
Someone must have added it.

When I bought my 1990's vintage pontoon boat project last year, it included a 1994ish 90 HP Force outboard set up for a water pressure gauge. I assume it was because the design of the boat made it next to impossible to see the telltale. This photo show the engine with the black plastic hose coming from a nipple on top of the thermostat housing.

Last winter I bought a 1993 Force 150 for the boat. The thermostat housing on it had a place for a fitting, but it appeared to be filled with a factory installed nylon plug. I replaced the plug with a nipple fitting and will attach it to the same pressure gauge.

Mine is is in the same spot as HotTommy's. except there is a upside down "L" brass fitting the hose connets to. And now that you mention it, the tubing did look to be installed after everything else, it was kinda free run up to the guage cluster. It was raining cats and dogs yesterday here, I didn't get in the boat to see. From what I understand, my motor doesnt have a tell tale. Maybe one of the PO's added it.. I'll take some pics this evening.. thanks for the replies

Yup, none of those tubing connections is factory but more mods by owners. Most did the mod to add a telltale while others like me used it for water pressure gauge and the rest for their temp gauge. Mod on Tommy's could have been better using a 90 degree fitting like the one on Steve's preventing kinks in the tubing.

Follow on question, if it is a pressure tubing would I beable to splice in a small section. The original wasn't long enough and when I reran it with my wires it came up short and broke at the through hull in the splash well. Was hoping to just splice in some tubing and not have to rerun a new one.

My sense is that the tubing does not have to withstand a lot of pressure, so I'd be comfortable with a splice using a double nipple with hose clamps on both sides. If it does leak the major effect will be that you'll have a telltale wherever the leak is. It shouldn't hurt the engine.

My preference would be not to have any joins in it as it is connected to the water from the power head, why create a problem, why not just redo the piping in a new run to eliminate and further possible problems/misreadings. You are going to spend the time to splice it and you ask if it is ok to do, your asking the question because you know you should do it right and do the whole job not a bandaid.
Also HotTommy I noticed on yours a tell-tale installed on the housing, why is it installed on the housing after the thermostat? normally they install them before the thermostat as it indicates your pump is working ok, to indicate your thermostat isn't working a temp or pressure gauge is used, or the buzzer is always a good sign.

I would prefer not to have water leaking around my powerhead from a leaking bit of tube which more than likely is old, hard and brittle.

I hear ya MickLovin, I ask because I have been unable to find the type of tubing used on mine...See pics here. Oh and mine does run to a pressure guage on the dash.

anyone know where I can get this type of tubing? It has a stop bushing on it, and a brass threaded retainer that screws into the fitting on the motor.

Is this tap into the cooling system in the right place to make it an actual tell tale? The one with the water stream coming out the motor?

That looks like a homemade job!
Gauge defiantly added later.
The hose diameter shouldn't make any difference.
The pressure is gonna build up to what its going to.
