I recently have had trouble with my 94 force 70hp starting. I took it into a shop and I was told it was the stator and it costs $500 for a new stator plus labor. It was my understanding that stators are about $200.

Sounds like you have fallen victim to the Red Stator implementation. Yes..expect to pay a lot of money...You will be getting a 16 amp charging system, instead of the original 9.

If you already have a voltage regulator..it should be cheaper.

TMD

The parts needed to convert to 16 amp was my question. I guess I need the 16 amp stator and change regulator also.
Was the 9 amp just not enough? What if I put another 9 amp on the engine, would it not last?

Re: 94 Force 70hp stator

your original force 9amp stator is still available brand new, if you dont require anymore than 9amps of charge on your boat, the nine amp stator will do just fine. if you stay with the nine amp stator it is just a bolt on and hook up the same wires and go. if you go with the new 16 amp kit be prepared for 3 hrs of install and figuring out what to wire up. good luck, bret
If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com. thanks,Bret

So why does Mercury want to sell an expensive conversion kit to replace the 9 amp?

Re: 94 Force 70hp stator

Why on earth would anyone want to put the old style black ones back on..They will fail again and again and again. You would be throwing money away.

TMD

Re: 94 Force 70hp stator

biebel,
It was cheaper for mercury to use an updated kit to retro fit all their old designs but the 9 amp has been upgraded is a lot nicer than it used to be. i have installed serveral over the past 5 yrs. and have never had to change one again. i installed one two weekends ago and the customer called to thank me on how nice his boat ran. the only people i recommend going to the 16 amp conversion are the people that need the extra amperage. thanks, bret

If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com. thanks,Bret

Are we talking about an oem 9amp stator that has been upgraded or an after market? Dave is the red stator 16 amp and how was the conversion.

Bieleb

The computer does not show an updated black stator. When the old part number is requested..we are sent to a parts bulletin. 96-1

This bulletin is the Red Stator implementation. This is the fix for all Black stator failures starting in the Late 80's.

TMD
