hi all,

I just purchased a 94 four wins horizon 180. the boat is in great condition when it starts. I am having issues starting the motor, the motor doesn't even sound like it is turning over. I turn the key and nothing happens, I almost think that it is not reading neutral which is causing it not to start. I wiggle the throttle for a long time and eventual (at random times) it will crank the motor over. Like i said I think that the motor is reading that it is in gear so it will not try to crank it over. Is this a throttle issue or maybe a cable issue. I took it to the shop and they replaced a relay in the throttle that was failing, but that did not solve the problem. Any help would be great.

This is what gets me... How come you take it to a shop.. Tell em what you think may be wrong and then that's all they do?. Can't they troubleshoot the thing and fix it? It could be anything.. Wiring.. solenoids..starter..Key switch.. Who knows? Electric problems have to traced down and each part eliminated.. Take the boat back to them..Have them fix this issue rather than throw some random part on and say done...

Who's staring? at you or the boat? ;)

Welcome Aboard!

Your starting circuit is basically a circuit that is completed at the key switch. the neutral safety switch is in the throttle/shift control (you said they replaced a relay?)

There's no relay in the throttle/shift quadrant. There is a switch that prevents you from cranking the engine unless the shifter is in neutral. If that switch is defective, it can prevent you from cranking the engine. (or it can allow you to crank the engine while it is in gear and then you could hurt or kill someone:eek: That's why it's there!)

Now having said that, there's any number points where the circuit can be open between the starter/solenoid and the key.

You also could have ground problems too. The place you paid to "fix" it should have known to check all that stuff.

I am gonna agree with Josh though......you already paid someone to "fix" it and they didn't.

If you didn't tell them you had to "jiggle" the throttle/shift control to get it to crank, you need to tell them that.

If you want to try to fix it yourself, you need to get an OEM, OMC service manual (for the right model and year(yours may be a 93 model engine/drive too....very common....). It will have the correct diagram with for your engine, trim system etc.....

Regards,

Rick
