94 johnson 225 ocean runner shift lever stuck

I have disconnected the shift cable and tried to pul and push manually but I get 1/4" of play.. The prop spins freely in both directions so i assume it is in nuetral.. Can I spray with wd40 or something? I read another thread of a similar problem with a (pulling powerhaed solution) I am praying that is not my solution. It is a cr of twins dont know if that makes a difference..

You will need to drop the lower unit. What has happened is the shift rod is frozen in the bushing where it goes into the lower unit. After removing the lower unit, take the bolts out around the cap the shift rod goes thru. Work the shift shaft out and remove the o ring from inside. Clean the bushing out and reassemble everything.

thanks for the advise.. It was exactly what you said. Put a new water pump while I was in there!!!!
