I have a '94 60 HP Johnson that on a cold start with fast idle lever up seems to be very weak and then the RPMs slowly start climbing until it reaches high idle after 20 seconds plus. Below is a video. Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

You should not be shifting it into forward with motor NOT RUNNING.------Post video with cowling off.-----What fuel pump is on this motor ?

It's hard to hear, but the motor was barely running when I shifted. Shifting prompted it to die completely.

This video is from last summer...my lakes are still frozen for another couple months.

It has the original VRO but the oil has been disconnected and plugged. Running 50:1

My mistake I thought motor had stalled.-----Post the results of a compression test.

I watched the video, and it appeared to me that you did not lift the fast idle lever up the first time you started the motor, you did not push the key in to choke it, and you put it into gear before the motor had any chance to warm up. The second time you started the motor in the video, you lifted up on the fast idle lever, you turned the key to start, and it did not start up until you pushed the key in to choke it. Then you let it warm up a bit, pulled the fast idle lever down, and took off after the motor warmed up a bit. All looked pretty normal to me.

The next time on a cold start, pull the fast idle lever up first, push the key in before you turn it to the start position, and your problem probably won't be there. Operator error I believe.

and may have to bump the key in once or twice if it hasn't quite hit operating temp.

Here's the scenario in this video. Had the motor up to operating temp and shut it down to troll for probably an hour or two. The first time starting it in the video was just to see if I needed to go through my whole cold start procedure. Typical cold start is to squeeze the ball, lift the lever, bump the key/primer, crank, bump again if need be. Since it didn't stay running doing it that way, then i went into cold start mode.

So just so i understand, upon cold start, is it normal for it to start out slow and have the RPMs gradually increase over 20 seconds until it hits fast idle like it does in the video?

Another issue is that after running for a while and coming back to idle, sometimes it will die out after idling for a minute or two.

Compression: 110/105/110

Key should be pushed in while cranking on cold start.------No it should not increase in revs up like that on start-up.----I would take the head off for a look see inside the motor.-----In the big picture a head gasket is cheap.
