94 maxum 1900 sr2 w/ 5.0lx mercruiser with gen 1 alpha?????

I'm trying to figure out this mystery of my boat that im fixing up. its a 94' maxum 1900 sr2 with a 5.0lx mercruiser. now according to the year and everything I've been reading online this boat should have a gen 2 alpha one stern drive on it since gen 1 was superseded by gen 2 in 1990. The boat clearly has a gen 1 unit. Why would this be? my only guess is that a previous owner f'ed up the original stern drive and replaced it with a gen 1 due to cost???? If anyone has any insight that would be awesome

Your guess is probably correct... what's the serial number on the outdrive?
