I have a 94 Mercury and every time I want to go fishing I have to put the charger on the battery. Which by the way, is new. I have only used the motor and boat approx 50 hours. It has a new stater but still will not charge. It has been tuned up this year. I have done every thing except kiss it good night. Where can I get the schematics for this motor?
Bill L

If you have a tach and it quit working, it's the rectifier. Check all the wiring connections and make sure there all tight and not corroded. If they look good, check the rectifier. It's easiest to check and least expensive to replace.

c/6

Hooty

The rectifier converts ac volts to dc volts. It'll probably have a red wire, two yellow wires and maybe a gray wire. If you don't have a manual, go up to the "Search" function and look for "Mercury rectifier".

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

It can be tested using a basic Multitester with a resistance scale (ohms) .

And I agree... most likely rectifier.
They can be damaged, bu disconnecting the battery while motor is running or loose or bad connection.

Re: 94 Mercury outboard not charging

I think you fellas may have helped me solve my problem (or head in the right direction) as well. My tach was in and out the other day when my cranking battery stopped being charged. My motor is an '87 Black Max 150 XR2. I have 0 experience working on outboards, but after an unpleasant experience with the local repair monopoly, I have vowed to change. I will check/replace my rectifier and see what happens..........Thanks

Re: 94 Mercury outboard not charging

if you have an amp gauge on your boat then while the motor is running look at the gauge if it is at zero or pegged out all the way then it is your rectifier. in your year model it is on the right side right next to your top plug. it is usually black and looks like two arrows facing away from each other. there will be two yellow wires going to it coming from under the flywheel. if your motor idles high and your amp gauge is pegged out then your rectifier is bad. it will over charge your battery and then make your stator go bad.
