95 40hp force problems...new to me fishing rig

Ran great on hose,took to lake today,was hard starting then ran 1/4 mile across lake ,fished for couple hours,motor fired up with simple flick of key told my buddy let's find some GPS spots ran on plane about 1/2 distance back alarm sounded and motor stopped,was towed back to ramp cussing all the way home cause previous owner said no worries good boat never let them down they just bought shiny new boat,pulled lu off checked impeller looked new as he had said,did notice there is no squirter on this motor before I took it to lake but did see plastic plug on top of top cylinder,wth?? Is this the reason on overheat??? Also motor has a backfire issue and won't idle on hose at all,its like a cheap 2.00 toy that breaks first time playing with it.

Soundslike you need to do a compression/ spark test.
The whizzer can be added.The plastic plug is where it goes.
Backfire?? Can be a bad fuel pump diaphram.Carb not set right.
Air screw out 1 turn from bottom(be gentle)
The only alarm you have is an overheat.

Going to do compression and diaphragm check tmmorrow,but what caused the overheat????impeller was just like new no bent or cracked blades.could timing be an issue?....I'm an evinrude,Johnson runner always had bad luck with mercury this is3rd one,I always run the brand specific oil with mid-grade fuel atleast....previous owner said motor has around 150 he's at most was on pontoon at vacation cabin in pa only used 3 weeks a year since new....looks like new so I believed him
