'95 Evinrude 150 loss of power

Yesterday, while cruising at idle for about 15 min, the engine suddenly bogged down and wanted to die. Was able to keep it running with full throtle and get home. Engine fires perfectly at the click of the key and will rev normally in neutral. But when put in gear under load, has no power. Full throttle will give 5-10 mph and sounds very choked. Throttle response resembled that of fouled plugs on my snowmobile. Have replaced the plugs and added dry gas. Idle may be a little smoother, but no change in power.

Any ideas?

It sounds like you have a dead cylinder. Check for spark to all and also check the compression on all cylinders. Post back with your findings and we can try to help from there. What did the old plugs look like?

They were all black and a little on the moist side. No deposits on them though. On one side the porcelon was black, and on the other side the porcelon had a hint of rootbeer color.

A compression test was my next thought after trying everything else today. Will post my test results in a couple of days.

Jeff

Re: '95 Evinrude 150 loss of power

New findings on this one:

One of the first things I did was put in new spark plugs. Since it is going to be a another day until I can get a compression gauge, I thought I'd check the plugs again. One side has blackened as usual, and the other side is still brand new and never burned. I have gas coming out of the hub exhaust when I trim it up. This leads me to believe it's not a carb problem.

I also found that the water pressure hose had come of the block, thus spraying water under the hood for some time in the same area as the ignition system.

Any ideas how far back to try to trace the electrical problem.

Are you getting any spark to the clean side? If not try swapping the powerpacks from side to side and see if the dead cylinders move.

Unfortunatly I'm a little new to outboard repair much past the storage maintenance. I have removed the plastic cover off the distributer area to expose the other end of the spark wires. I do see 6 large hex head screw which looks like it holds that assembly to the block. Are the power packs you speak of under that? I will have the test light tomorrow to check spark through the wires.

You need a shop manual for your motor if you're going to attempt repair yourself. It's simple to confirm no spark on apparently dead bank ... pull the plug wires off on at a time while running; if no change in RPM, that cylinder is not firing. You may want to get an insulated tool to do this so you don't get zapped. If you move the power pack from the good bank to the non-firing bank and you then get ignition in the non-firing bank, you'll know you need a new power pack.

Check the pack output to coil, engine running under load. Check for coil arcing to metal plate behind coil.
