After reviewing the tip and tricks,, the homemade tools, and the recommended bearing axle puller in this tread too: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=364003

I bought the bearing axle puller set. However, when I try sliding it in,, the insert refused to pivot, flatten out so I can grab the bearing..

Finally I noticed for the first time, I've looked inside before but ignorantly had not noticed,, there's another cylinder wall just behind the bearing,, about 1/2 inch or so.. I'm like WHAT???T??
I didn't see any obstruction in the manuals, but,

That rear axle bearing puller can't pivot within the distance between it and the bearing to lodge on the bearing and grab it..

What the heck??

Another "special"" feature inside of the SX cobra that's different then normal drives!!???

It's a seal, same thing as all the OMC Cobra drives had for years before Volvo bought them out.
Have never had a gimbal bearing I couldn't remove from either the Cobra or the SX transom shields by just using a standard 10 lb. slide hammer. They do have to come out straight, or the will bind and not come out.

However, when I try sliding it in,, the insert refused to pivot, flatten out so I can grab the bearing..

Use the 3 finger inside puller on the gimbal bearing.

Re: 95 SX cobra gimbal bearing removal??

yeah thanks don,, I can get on the other side of the seal, But,, about 1/2 inch behind that is,, I'm guessing after having checked the manual, the alignment tube.. ,,

So, yes between dragging it back and trying to get the pivoting tip of the axle bearing puller, as noted in the above thread, link, from tips and stuff.. there's not enough distance between that tube and the rear seal to allow it to open and grab it..

So, I guess you are saying,, moreover, "Yup, that type of puller ain't gonna work"..

And I'm like DANG!, I just dropped 30 bucks on that set..

So,, is there a photo of a puller that's not a billion bucks,, and something other than home-made welding jobs,, or modified things, as my little garage is limited on trying to fabricate something of metal.. ??/

perhaps I can grind off an area, on that axle bearing puller to help it get grab?

And or,, what is going to work, with the bellows still attached? does anybody know if a automotive parts place rents em?

Don't go past the seal! You are only removing the gimbal bearing, not trying to pull the coupler and engine through the transom shield.

Post a picture of what you are using, from the sounds of it, you aren't using the proper tool to remove the gimbal bearing. Not sure what you're doing.

Like I said Don,, inside the link in first post, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=364003, the rear axle bearing puller, 45Auto recomends, that's saved in your sticky tips 'gimbal bearing pullers'

This is 45Auto's photo..Of the rear axle bearing puller he recommends, the same as I bought.

View attachment 122786

And yeah duh,, lol,, I ain't trying to yank out the whole plate, lol..

But like I said, I can not get it to pivot inside there to grab the bearing, or even grab behind the seal.. I'm replacing both, anyway. Now that I've noticed,, there's another cylinder behind the bearing and seal,, I think that's showing in the manual as an alignment tube, but,, not sure..

It seems that whatever it is, it's too close to the bearing seal and bearing to let this tool pivot into a 'T' flat and grab..

Re: 95 SX cobra gimbal bearing removal??

OK I solved it.. First off though, might I suggest that link in your tips, sticky, tools, and 'bearing pullers' get an addition, that, the rear axle puller shown in it, will not work for Volvo-penta SX Cobra drives?

having taken the hint, don, "3 finger puller" I still did not understand which puller you'd meant,, I sure could not find any bearing puller on the net that's capable of getting inside of the bellows and pulling it.. except a few offered at e-bay, that don't look like they can through the bellows either. but most important, those e-bay job-ies, want a chunk of change too!! .

However, The sticky link also said that AZ would lend you that rear axle puller, (to bad I didn't read that part before I dropped 30 bucks for the set)..

Anyways,, I called em to see if they had anything else,, which turned out they do.. In fact, quite a few auto parts places do..

And they "Lend it" to you with credit card deposit,.. Which incidentally, I called a few marine parts suppliers, to rent or barrow the right tools and that's a total no go,, they won't rent or loan,, nuthin..,, which is one reason as to why, I was so blind trying to figure out,, just exactly which puller to use.. not exactly friendly in the tool depatments round these here parts, on the telephone,, except they offered for me to haul the boat to em, and change it for 100 bucks, plus parts, obviously.. and the same to align it. "Per hour" . ..

It's a 10 pound slide hammer with a three finger puller attachment..

Bod-a-bing, bot-a Bang,, 4 smacks and the bearing is out..

Thanks again!,
