Re: 950ss merc drive shaft
Were you able to get the pinion gear off after you pulled the nut on the end of the driveshaft? The pinion gear sometimes gets stuck on the driveshaft and needs some persuasion to come off.

You may need to carefully heat the gearcase with a propane or Mapp gas torch (I just picked up a nice self-starting Bernzomatic torch kit at Lowe's for less than $40) around the ball-bearing area under the water pump. Heat from the outsides of the gearcase only.

Then, put a 4X4 or other suitable sturdy piece of wood across the top of the gearcase. Holding the lower unit by the driveshaft, and keeping it just off the ground, sharply rap the wood downwards and this will usually break the driveshaft loose.

The only things keeping it from coming out at this point are the fitment at the pinion gear, and around the ball bearing.

Once I had one that was stuck so bad I had to heat up the pinion gear. Not a recommended thing to do, but it was the only way I could get the thing apart.

Yours likely won't be that nasty. HTH & Good Luck........ed
