hit stump going forward motor stuck in neutral had previous shift probs
mech mech said shift rod was not in the best of shape

I hate to second-guess a mechanic that has the advantage of actually seeing the motor. But I'd suspect a catastrophic gear failure or a simple spun prop hub before a shift shaft problem. Is this a Suzuki (which I know little to nothing about) or a Yamaha?
when going down the river in forward hit a stump now motor runs good but won'tgo in forward or reverse sounds like linkage isn't connented or something

disconnect the shift cable
try shifting by hand
sounds like u need to pull lower unit
i would opt for a new complete lower unit
if the shops rebuild it, i would be wary
