Have an intermittent alarm coming on for the pump and have been told the impeller probably needs replacing. Do you just remove the lower unit and replace or are there seals to replace also and does the shift have to be in neutral, forward or reverse to remove the lower unit?

jimb,If your alarm is intermittent as you describe it is likely not the overtemp alarm.Your engine should be equipped with the following alarm tones:continuous tone and engine will operate at or near max rpm is fuel restriction, continuous tone and rpms are limited to 2500(S.L.O.W. is initiated) is overheat, one short tone every 40 sec is low oil in reservoir, and rapid short tones is a no oil alarm.Which alarm are you experiencing?

Re: 96 90hp mercury impeller

Thanks and I must apologize again, this is my neighbors boat and it is a Mercury 90 hp 1996 after all. The tone is intermittent like a buzzing sound with nothing that I can tell that sets it off. It comes on periodically at low or high speed. He admitted that it had been run dry when he tried to start it up prior to going on a trip and immediately shut it off when the alarm went off while running it on a flush. That is when this started. He was told by one repair person that he needed to replace the impeller as it may have been damaged even though the stream is strong. Any ideas? How do I replace?

Intermittent alarm is low oil level not overheating which is continuous.Check oil level in tank,if full, when alarm is sounding disconnect the wire from the oil tank sender if alarm stops youve found the problem. The senders in the oiltanks can & do fail the only solution is a new tank!!To check the impeller put in forward gear, remove bolts from lower unit dont forget the one under the trim tab.Remove the lower unit, pull the pump apart & youre at the impeller. Here in Australia it is cheaper to buy a kit to repair the pump than it is to buy just the impeller!!Get a manual.will help lots good luck:)
