Hey all! New here but not really new to boating... Here's the problem... boat warms up to temp fine, idles fine, runs fine but I notice a vibration... If I throttle up, the rpms go up and the engine feels like it wants to go but it doesn't get up on plane and vibrates.... Now, I can push it and it will get up on plane but the rpms are higher than normal and the speed is lower than normal... Here's the kicker, if I put it in reverse and throttle it for a sec or 2, I engage forward and no vibration and it runs fine... These are the only things I have noticed... The first time it happened, i did the above and ran it all day without the issue showing up again...

Anyone have any suggestions on what it could be? I am going to go out and clean the water separator filter and see if there is an water or such in there...
Thanks for the help...

Also, prop is newer(2 months old) and is the correct OEM size for my boat...

How long have you had the boat?
When was the last time the outdrive was removed and inspected, engine alignment checked?
Have you ever smelled burnt rubber from the engine bay?

My first thought is your engine coupler is going out

Had the boat a year and a half.... recently replaced the head gasket, but have not done anything with the outdrive. I did replace the drive belt, but only removed the engine mount to get the belt around... removed it and replaced the belt without the engine moving the slightest... No burnt smell at all...

Sounds like the Coupler is a pain, but I would not think the alignment is out.... It ran excellent all season long... Anything I can look at or check to see if the coupler is bad? Rear of the engine where the drive comes in? Any help is appreciated...

Thanks,
harry

Is your prop loose on the shaft, or are you missing any parts there?

I rechecked the prop and it was tight and fine on the shaft.... I think I may just pull it off and check everything out just to rule that out. Also, I was just thinking about this last night.... My wife pulled the boat out of the water and the trim was down, it scraped the launch and I just trimmed it back up. Could this have caused a misalignment with the drive shaft or even worse? I just remembered that and I bet that has something to do with al this.... :blue:

Scribe or paint a line across the hub and prop. Take the boat back out and then check to see if the prop has moved out of line with the hub. OR put on a spare prop and see if the problem goes away.

What's the maintenance history?

Did the bellows about a year ago... everything else checked out to be good... I am going to mark the prop and hub and see if it is spinning on me... I will check back soon. Thank you

He said that he put it in reverse for a sec and then forward and the issue went away... could the shift cable need adjustment. What if the dogs are slipping when the vibration is happening? I would assume you would feel and hear grinding not vibration... Or the prop hub slipping and the brief reverse seated again. Is it a replaceable hub or pressed hub? Jeff

Its an alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive... It is a replaceable hub. I bought a new prop about 2 months ago and used the nut, lock washer, hub insert, etc. to put the new one on. Everything was fine until now.... No grinding, howling or anything else.... I wanted to take it out today, but not able too... I can check on the shift cable operation also when I get out there next... Thanks
