To remove the starter, you need to remove the solenoid and remove the bolt behind it.

To remove the foot, you need to unhook the shift linkage in the water pickup. Its a barrel nut. You then need to remove the upper bolt of this assembly by moving it upwards and removing the black retainer. Remove the bolts next holding the foot in place. My gasket was cooked on there so I used wd40 to soften it up. Tomorrow when the parts get here, we will blow compressed air through the water channels and totally rebuild the pump.

Piece of mind

Hey remmer....if memory serves, I believe you have to remove the starter bracket with the starter attached to get it off. Problems with the starter?

Good job on the lower unit! Which gasket was fried? The only gasket I remember is the the gasket under the water pump plate.

Yes the whole starter bracket comes out. It looked more complicated than it was. I found a broken wire between one brush. It would still turn over but very weakly.

The gasket I am referring to is the one between the bottom plate and the foot. The thin other gasket is completely rotted away. I think its a gasket. Really to thin I think. On the upper pump housing, there is a seal that sits in a groove. Its not a whole seal. Its intact but when the kit gets here today, Ill see what it entails. Ill pass on more info when Im done.

Catch a fish

Happy happy joy joy for my friend. An interesting note to be made is that there was no "thin gasket". I am tending to think that due to age, the gasket material breaking down was what I found on the metal plate. The kit had the one bottom gasket, the orings and the housing seal. It also had a new plate in it that I used. It now puts out good water flow. The starter is very strong and she starts right up. I ran around yesterday for a few hours on the boat which is a 16 ft. C Skiff. I live on the water and drove it to work last night. Rough huh. I waiting on him now so we can catch a few fishes. Be safe.
