Hello all, I have a 96 Evinrude 48 spl that has been running great up until just recently. Went to start it and it just floods out really quickly. Seems to not be getting any spark for some reason. The weather has been a little cooler past few days, but other than that nothing is different. I changed out the plugs and checked the plug wires and still won't start. Any ideas on what might be causing this? thanks for any tips

Yes you have to push in the key to prime the motor, But what ends up happening is it won't start and gets flooded out. no fuel is being burned.

If the motor is not cranking fast enough there will be no spark.-----If you feel it is flooding then stop pushing thekey in for a long time !

I'm not pushing it for a long time. I only push it up a couple times while trying to start it. I've tried without pushing it up also. I'm thinking the power pack died.

Did a spark test and got nothing, just trying to find out what causes this so I can correct it.

Thanks for the link Sutor623. I tested it and both cylinders aren't getting spark. Took the power pack off and I'm going to test that as well.

Ok so after testing the switch, solenoid, and power pack, I'm thinking I probably have a bag coil. it will start but only runs off of the bottom cylinder. What do you guys think?

K, stop. There is a logical way to diagnose your engine. 1st we do four things. 1) compression test. 2: fuel sample (looking for phase separation) 3: open air gap spark test set to 7/16" gap. 4. load test battery

report back. You said both aren't getting spark but you did not say if you are getting spark on one. I am assuming you are because you say it starts. A spark test with proper guage will tell us which direction to go next.

Yo also say you "tested power pack" How?

You can buy a spark tester or make one. search the forum for spark tester and it will come up, might be in the stickies at top.

To get any help here you have to be wiling to follow the steps and make an effort.

You can help yourself by answering these questions.-Does spark jump a gap of 7/16" or more , yes or no ?---Have you tested and posted compression values , Yes or no ?---Have you inspected reed valves?-Have you removed high speed jets in bottom of float bowls for cleaning ?---And slamming volunteers that give you tips certainly does not help your cause !!!!

It was indeed the ignition coil that went bad. replaced and running great again :)
