Re: 96 force 40 hp lower unit help

Some people do this some don't.Put it in forward gear. That way when the unit is put back on you can use the prop to turn the shaft to engage the splines.Only pull up on the prop.Pushing down won't do anything.
Remove the screws 5, I think.
See pic.You should replace 16/17 and make sure 11/18 aren't worn too bad.
Reassemble with grease on the splines of the pump and inside the housing#11
and #33/24 grease on the splines.

While your buying parts get a fuel pump rebuild kit. Then replace the hoses from the tank to the motor.Ethanol is messing with a lot on outboards.

You can install a pee tube.See pic, powerhead #19 has a small hole that you can get a fitting and install a hose.
Good luck.J

Where the spark plugs go_On top.
Yes 3 little holes it's ok for the water to come out there.
MOst exhaust comes through the prop.

Re: 96 force 40 hp lower unit help

Ok well today i got home and decided to remove the lower unit.First i changed my gear lube b/c it hasnt been changed in five years.well old oil came out looking good with minamil meatal shavings on the magnetic bolt.Replaced lube and begain taking out bolts to remove lower unit.I found the shift lever to be visable on back side with a nut and another nut to take tension off the outher nut. After removing all bolt it poped right out.Ok total time including changing lube maybe 30 min and this was first time.i kinda laughed and thought they realy want 200 bucks to do this.My parts for water pump arnt coming till next wek sometime and when they do i will update on how well it goes back together.
