This car has about 100K miles and the spark plugs are frozen in place. The repair shop thinks they will break off before comming loose. They tried with the engine both hot & cold.

Any tricks?

Thank you,
Nick

The Triton motors are famous for this issue as the plugs are buried down in the deep well. All you need to do is get some moisture down in there and they corrode up.

Many have said to pull the plugs every 50 or 60 k just to avoid that. If you can let the car sit awhile, I would use some PB Blaster down each hole.

What I would also do is consult a dealer, they might have more experience and more tricks.

Like WizeOne said. The Tritons are very well known for this (5.4l/6.8l). Ford recently came out with a special tool to extract the plugs after they snap off. The 4.6l in your Vic doesnt have a real history with this problem. As suggested PB Blaster may free them up otherwise removing them hot works too (just be careful not to burn your hand, wear mechanix gloves).

A Guy I worked with had the same issue at 86k miles.

He ended up spraying the SLIGHTEST amount of WD-40 onto each plug, then the turned a can of compressed air upside down and chilled the plug (upside down can of compressed air shoots frozen liquid). The combination of the wd-40 seepage and contraction of the cold plug he was able to use a pneumatic impact wrench and they came out with no issue. Please remember...the SLIGHTEST amount of WD-40.

Sounds crazy but it worked.

Good Luck

Sounds interesting, not crazy.

I thank all for their suggestions. Now I just have to find the time to try them.

Keep on boating,
Nick

Service procedure below. This works for any hemi head engine with centrally located plugs in the cylinder head-regardless of brand.

1. Do NOT attempt to remove HOT.

2. Loosen slightly. DO NOT TURN BACK AND FORTH.

3. Spray a minimal amount of carb. cleaner down the hole. (Be careful-too much can seep down and create an engine hydrolock.) This will soften the carbon deposits. Let soak for at least 15 minutes.
(If you think you overdid it, turn the engine over with the plugs removed.)

4. Work the plugs back and forth, about 1/4 turn, at a time.

5. When installing, use high temp anti sieze on the threads.

Spray a little PB Blaster down in the holes not too much. Works very well. Do a little for a few days then try. Also blow out the spark plug hole with a compressor before you spray anything. This has work on some old motors for me.

OK I took the easy but expensive way out. Shame on me. Brought it to the Lincoln Mercury dealer. They didn't even remark on any problems removing the plugs. The car runs great, my wife is happy therefore I'm happy.

I SINCERELY thank all who gave suggestions.

Thanks again,
Nick
