96 Johnson 112 SPL Rectifier & Strator Problems

I had a new power head put on the motor and now the stator & rectifier are burning out. When the motor is running it is showing 17 volts all the time. Then either the stator or rectifier are burning out. I have been to two dealers who sold me new parts but the same thing keeps happening. Anyone out there had a similar problem?

I wanted to add to this that this engine does not have VRO, so according to a dealer it takes a different stator & rectifier. I put on the ones he recommemded and it still shows 17 volts on the voltmeter and on my depthfinder that shows voltage. So far these didn't burn out.

Have you put a digital voltmeter on the battery to confirm that it reads 17 volts? Dash mounted voltmeters are notoriously undependable.

What does the dash mounted voltmeter read with the key on and the motor off?

You can add the voltage regulator to the top of the engine block and take off the rectifier. That way the voltage will always be regulated to below 15V.

Re: 96 Johnson 112 SPL Rectifier & Strator Problems

Thanks for the come back. This boat doesn't have a dash voltmeter. It was a factory package that Wellcraft had in 1996. The motor has an "X" in front of the serial # showing that it was a "package" engine. That's why it isn't VRO. My depth finder has a voltage meter built in. I checked it with a digital voltmeter, and it shows 11.5 with the key on,and the motor not running. When you start the motor it goes up to 16.5 to 17.2 or in that range epending on RPM. If you turn on all the electricial items, bilge pump, aireator pump, radio, depth finder and lights it will go down to around 15V at idle. Would I need a special voltage regulator? The same engine with VRO have voltage regulators. Now the mechanic that put the new power head on said he thinks there is a short in the wiring where it runs through the tubes below the deck. I wasn't having trouble before the new power head so I can't believe a short would happen at the same time the new power head was put on. The new power head had a regulator on it and the stator burned out, and this is what got this all started.

I can't see how a short in the boat wiring can increase your voltage. You've got a problem with your stator/rectifier/regulator combination. Sounds like you are getting no regulation. I see that model had different stators & rectifiers/regulators for 20" & 25" models. The 20" model had a rectifier but no regulator. You've probably got this option. Check out Seahorse's advice above.
