I have a 96 Johnson 130 on a 95 Seaswirl Striper 20' center console. The boat is used in salt and brackish water in and around the Sandy Hook, NJ area.

1. What water separating fuel filter should I go with?
2. Where is the best location to install it on this boat?

Re: 96 Johnson 130 - Water separator question

I have two different brands on my boats one is an Attwood from Walley World and the other is a Moeller from Gander MTN; both seem to do the job equally well. The king of the group is called Racor but I'm not paying $49.95 for a refill filter; it can't be that much better. Both are mounted on the transom and one is before the primer bulb and one is after the bulb. Both work equally well so for me it doesn't matter but you will probably hear from some who say that one way or the other is better. Good luck:)

The seperator can be anywhere, but must be mounted vertical, can side down. On my 2100 DC striper, I stuck it inside the hatch covering the splashwell. That area also has the batteries, wiring and oil tank. It is upstream of the primer bulb. Unlike Will, I feel you need only one...

doesnt too many filters disrupt the fuel supply, and cause fuel pumps to go back early????

thought I heard that

I have an inline filter and a water seperator and a long run from the tanks, and suspect that is causing my fuel pump some strain..

I wasn't clear enough; I have one filter on my bay boat with a 150 Johnson and one on my tin can flat boat with a 15 evinrude. No problem with either one.

Many of these engines were never made to handle an inline fuel water separator. While an excellent idea, what with today's fuels-you need to be very careful that you do not add any additonal fuel restrictions in the system. Adding that filter can increase fuel suction and could cause the engine to run lean at high rpms. Make sure the filter will run on your hp engine. Likely you should remove any other inline filters when you add a water separator. Mercury marine makes a nice universal kit which has both the aluminum head, hose barbs, plugs and filter in the box.

I think Racor is still the best. They make one where you can visually check to see if you have water in the filter and then drain it without taking the filter off.
